San Diego Hammers Cal Poly 18-6 Sunday

SAN DIEGO, CA- San Diego wrapped up a season opening series with visiting Cal Poly SLO on Sunday, winning easily 18-6. The Toreros totaled 19 hits and scored five first-inning runs. San Diego (2-1) claims the three-game series with two straight wins over the Mustangs and prepare to host the defending national

USD third baseman Freddy Sandoval hit a pair of homeruns Sunday; one right handed and one left handed. The second, batting from the left side, was a two- run shot to right field that extended the Torero lead to 18-4 in the eighth inning. Sandoval’s homers highlighted a day that saw nine San Diego players register hits, with six enjoying multi-hit games.

Jose Ortega, San Diego’s second baseman, went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI’s. Making his first start at USD, leftfielder Randy Curtis went 3-for- 5 with a double. Gavin Ng doubled in three runs and Lucas Wennersten scored twice and had a pair of RBI’s.

Sean Warlop (1-0) made the start for USD and pitched four innings to earn the victory. Warlop struck out two and left the game with an 11-1 lead after four. Michael Bass and Tony Perez each pitched an inning in relief, retiring the side in order.

Cal Poly (1-2) lost its second straight. Starter Andrew McDaniel (0-1) along with Nolan Moser and Garrett Olson, were hit hard by San Diego. Seven Mustang pitchers were used by Poly Head Coach Larry Lee Sunday. The Mustangs did score three runs in the sixth and two more in the ninth.

USD hosts Texas next weekend, with games Friday (2 PM), Saturday (1 PM) and Sunday (1 PM) scheduled at San Diego’s Cunningham Stadium.
