USD Baseball: Toreros
Earn 4-1 Victory Over Cal Poly Saturday
SAN DIEGO, CA- San Diego senior Chad Cummings came on to pitch four scoreless
innings helping USD defeat visiting Cal Poly SLO 4-1 Saturday at Cunningham
Stadium. Six-foot-five junior first baseman Lucas Wennersten went 3-for-4
and hit a solo homerun in the bottom half of the seventh to lead USD offensively.
San Diego (1-1) rebounded from a 12-5 loss on Friday to even the season opening
series with the Mustangs at one game apiece. Justin Blaine, a freshman left-
hander from Westlake Village, pitched three innings in his first college start.
Blaine fanned three and gave up one earned run in his debut.
Along with Wennersten, Torero junior Joey Prast enjoyed a multi-hit game against
Cal Poly going 2-for-3 on Saturday. Prast played well defensively in right
field, helping the San Diego defense limit the Mustangs to just one run on
eight hits.
Cal Poly (1-1) took a one run lead in the top half of the third inning. Sophomore
outfielder Billy Saul, who went 3-for-5 on the afternoon, knocked in leadoff
hitter Sam Herbert to register the Mustangs lone run. Left-handed
starter Josh Kougl was chased from the game during the two-run USD seventh,
taking the loss in his first appearance this season.
The Toreros and Mustangs play one more at San Diego’s Cunningham Stadium Sunday
afternoon at 1:00 PM.
