USD Baseball: Mustangs Run Away With Season Opener

SAN DIEGO, CA- The Cal Poly SLO Mustangs dealt the University of San Diego Toreros a 12-5 loss Friday in both team’s season opener. Led by senior starter Tyler Fitch (1-0), who pitched six solid innings to post the win, Cal Poly was able to hold off the reigning West Coast Conference Champions at San Diego’s Cunningham Stadium.

With the score 5-2 in the top-half of the seventh inning, Torero second baseman Jose Ortega allowed a routine groundball to reach the outfield, extending the inning which yielded another San Diego fielding miscue and a Mustang base hit, giving Cal Poly an insurmountable 8-2 lead.

San Diego junior Aaron Wilson (0-1) suffered the loss, starting and working four innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. Batting left-handed USD senior Tony Perez drove in three of San Diego's five runs. Perez went 4-for- 5 on the day playing both center field and pitching. USD junior’s Joey Prast and Lucas Wennersten both totaled a pair of hits for the Toreros.

Cal Poly junior first baseman Kyle Wilson went 4-for-6 and scored twice. Eight different Mustangs crossed the plate Friday and as a team Cal Poly totaled 17 hits. Leftfielder Billy Saul scored twice along with teammate Sam Herbert.

The series continues over the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday games slated for 1:00 p.m. at Cunningham Baseball Stadium.
