San Diego Places 38th Nationally at 2003 NCAA Championships
The University of San Diego Toreros finished an incredible 2003 swim season
with a strong showing at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC)
Championships held in Long Beach, California. Led by fifth-year head coach
Mike Keeler, a two-time PCSC Coach of the Year, the Toreros placed 38th
in the nation at the NCAA Championships, setting a host of new PCSC and
school records.
The Toreros were led by seniors Kaitlin Bourne and Carolyn Gorrick. Gorrick,
a native of Sydney, Australia, ended the season with three NCAA provisional
qualifying times in the 100 Butterfly (55.46), 200 Butterfly (2:01.60),
and the 200 IM (2:03.65). She, along with Bourne, was one of the six USD
swimmers named to the All-PCSC First Team, an honor they have both received
for throughout their four year USD careers. Individually, Gorrick set
a new school record for the fastest 100 meter butterfly in PCSC competition
with a time of 55.46. Together, Gorrick and Bourne led three of the four
relay teams that participated in the PCSC Championships to four new PCSC
records in the 400 Freestyle, 200 Medley, and 400 Medley. Gorrick held
a USS National Championships qualifying time in the 100 yard Butterfly,
the 200 yard Butterfly, and the 200 Individual Medley and set three NCAA
Championship provisional qualifying times in those same events. During
the regular season, both Gorrick and Bourne swam strongly, leading the
Toreros to a dual meet record of 5-4-1. Together they led a relay team,
made up of freshmen Ashley Swart and Kelly Cobourn, to a USS National
Championships qualifying time in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:28.93), also
a new USD record.
